Fuel Costs Backgrounder
- Since 1999 the Federal Government has collected $332, 623, 887 in fuel excise taxes. They are poised to collect somewhere around 90, 000 in 2005 alone.[1]
- According to IATA, The global airline industry will post a cumulative loss of $7.4 billion US this year. This is 23% more than previously forecast. [2]
- Airlines may pay 54 per cent more this year for fuel than last year. Based on an average oil price over 12 months of $57 per barrel for Brent crude, the industry's fuel bill will top $97 billion.
- WestJet Airlines Ltd. and Air Canada have raised fares twice this summer to cope with rising fuel costs.
- WestJet has also locked in some prices for its fuel over the next three months.

- The airline industry lost $36 billion between 2001 and 2004. North American carriers racked up $32 billion of that amount and could lose more than $8 billion combined this year. - IATA
- Montreal holiday travel group Transat AT said last week it expects to generate significantly lower profit margins in coming months despite the fact its bookings are up. The company said it spent 68 per cent more on aircraft fuel in its latest quarter than during the same period last year.[3]
- The industry fuel bill rose from US$44 billion in 2003 (at an average price of US$29/barrel Brent) to US$63 billion (US$38/barrel Brent) in 2004. At US$57 per barrel, the industry fuel bill for 2005 will top US$97 billion.[4]
