Reaction to Budget

The February 23rd Budget was a great disappointment to ATAC and all its members. Your Association has been pursuing very attractive and promising discussions with Minister Lapierre and others about what needs to be done for our industry. We have been pleased that we seemed to have a Minister that understands transportation issues. Unfortunately, this Budget clearly demonstrates that the government in general has no understanding of the importance of transportation to our country's economy or the critical issues that face our industry.

Attached is a brief synopsis of Budget initiatives that affect our industry. The only issue that is in any way positive is a modest reduction in Air Travellers Security Charge. However, the government was simply "balancing the books" in response to the Auditor General's report. They have given no indication that they are going to deal with the financial inequity of air travellers paying for security while other modes have their security needs met through general revenues.

By far the biggest disappointment was that there was no commitment to deal with the ever increasing and serious problem of airport rents. The attached Press Release clearly outlines our concerns in this matter. ATAC will be vigorously expressing our disappointment and will continue seeking commitments from the government to deal with this issue.

I would encourage all members to aggressively pursue your local MPs and Regional Ministers in an effort to explain to them the critical importance of our industry to both the local and national economy. If you need any detailed information or other assistance please contact the ATAC office.
