Aviation Emissions

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) at its 37th Assembly in 2010 adopted a resolution on climate change, encouraging member states to submit action plans outlining their policies and actions on aviation CO2 emissions and to submit annual reports on progress toward an agreed upon aspirational goal of achieving carbon neutral growth in the Air Transport Industry by 2020. More information related to ICAO environmental issues may be found at:

ATAC, along with other industry stakeholder groups, is participating in a Transport Canada working group to develop a strategic plan action plan with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector during the years 2011 to 2016. Several sub-groups have been formed to study specific areas where improvements may be achieved, such as:

  • Performance based navigation;

  • Surveillance;

  • APU and Ground Support Equipment use;

  • De-icing procedures;

  • Taxiing;

  • Alternative fuels; and

  • Best practices/lessons learned.
